Oliver Gagliani: Scores of Abstraction.

Before Photoshop and other digital media programs opened up the world of synthesized enhancement, photographers relied on framing, composition, and riveting subject matter to deliver the desired image. Among the many master photographers of the pre-digital age, Oliver Gagliani possessed a particularly preternatural ability to produce complex, imaginary landscapes that to the modern eye appear as if they must be digitally enhanced.

Branden Aroyan

A permanent and perpetually positive fixture in area lineups since making the move to S.B. some 13 years ago, Aroyan was recently named a finalist for Surfing Magazine’s prestigious Follow the Light Foundation Grant. Living with his wife, Valerie, and their dog Levi in the shadows of one of our most fickle yet rewarding homegrown waves, Aroyan, who has had his art shown in galleries all around the county and in the pages of countless international surf publications, personifies the type of warm-hearted stoke and easygoing generosity that a good surf session will give you. For more of Aroyan’s work and to scope out some super groovy organic clothing featuring his art, visit lowtiderising.com.

Carmen, presented by State Street Ballet.

“Wait, how did you just give her tickets?” cried an anxious woman beside us as we hurried past the long box office line and into a packed Lobero. At 13 years old, the State Street Ballet (SSB) is outgrowing the cozy confines of its theatrical home, just in time for the March 2008 reopening of the Granada. In the meantime, those of us fortunate enough to have secured tickets early are being treated to terrific dance productions in an intimate, lovely, historical theater-and those left out in the cold have reason to be jealous.
