Poetry Out Loud

Ready to read your poetry aloud? Then Beth Taylor-Schott’s Poetry Out Loud class at SBCC’s Adult Ed is the place for you. The class will help keep your mind active and develop speaking skills, but it’s really about sharing beautiful words.

Thomas Tighe

Tighe was delighted to speak with Farmer, whom he respects enormously. “He could not have been more gracious,” said Tighe. “He kept trying to ask me what I thought about the questions I was asking him, ‘as a contemporary and a colleague.'” We’re honored to publish their conversation, which begins here. Santa Barbara Symphony Opens Last Season At the Arlington

“It’s been a long process, but a very good process,” said Santa Barbara Symphony Executive Director John Robinson on an early morning last week in the symphony’s upper State Street offices. “It’s been May since our subscribers have heard anything from us. That’s the longest lull in our year. Our staff is going to be waiting [for opening night] with bated breath, too.”

Stand up Straight: The Alexander Technique

International Alexander Awareness Week, October 6-14, involves celebrations in 14 countries, and one right here in Santa Barbara. F. M. Alexander, a Shakespearean actor who lost his voice while performing, founded Alexander Technique a century ago. Lack of medical explanations or solutions forced Alexander to solve his own problem, and he spent nine years devoted to rigorous self-observation and experimentation. Through his discoveries, he regained his rich voice.

Lamb Loin Chops in Syrah-Shallot Sauce with Gremolata

While I like to have a little lamb but generally feel fleeced buying it, that’s not the case with the less expensive but still delicious lamb loin chop. That’s the one shaped like a T-bone, which means some eating with your hands is often helpful. This recipe is based on one I cut out of the L.A. Times years ago and finally adapted. The gremolata, a variation on the usual ossobucco accompaniment, lifts the dish in delicious ways.

The Curse of the Perro

FRUTA DEL DIABLO: My guess is UCSB chemistry professor Thomas Bruice just doesn’t like strawberries. What other explanation could there possibly be? Bruice was one of the 54 world-class chemists and biochemists who signed a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency late last month, urgently warning the agency not to approve the use of methyl iodide, a potent soil fumigant, necessary for the cultivation of strawberries.

2007 Endorsements: Santa Barbara City Council

For too long, the City of Santa Barbara and its elected leaders rested on their environmental laurels as the so-called birthplace of the environmental movement. But, in fact, many similar-sized cities were pursuing more innovative programs than our own. In recent years, however, that’s changed-and dramatically for the better. City Hall approved two major solar installations on its own structures and has eliminated design guidelines that hindered private residents from going solar.
