Supporters Rally for Evicted Nuns

Ernie Salomon, Santa Barbara’s curmudgeonly crusader and outspoken public-access talk show host, has jumped into the fray to save the three Sisters of Bethany nuns from being evicted from their digs at 250 North Nopal Street, next to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

Walkin’ the Light Blue Line

Developer Jerry Beaver is seeking donations to help defray the $35,000 he said he spent fighting Light Blue Line, the global warming awareness project withdrawn by its proponents in the face of withering scorn in late August. Beaver dismissed as “so much horse manure” reports that he’d use the money collected to bankroll those running against incumbent city councilmembers Das Williams, Helene Schneider, and Brian Barnwell, noting that he knew only one of the challengers, Frank Hotchkiss, and would make a modest donation to his campaign.

Bren Names Patio After Sponsor

In recognition of the $1-million endowed fellowship that UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science and Management received from the Goleta-based Deckers Outdoor Corporation, the school has pledged that a 1,545-square foot patio at Bren Hall, and the fellowship itself, will forever bear the name of the company.

Positively State Street

BLUE’S CLUES: Bessie Smith will surely be looking down from her place in music legend heaven on Thursday, September 20, but this time she won’t be singing the “St. Louis Blues.” Instead, she will witness the evolution of the style of music she made so popular back in the 1920s. Otis Taylor brings his “trance blues” to the Midland School Amphitheatre in Los Olivos, making the transition from summer to autumn a little more soulful.

Mi.el Designs Launches in S.B.

“It’ll happen,” said 28-year-old fashion designer Elise Smith. “We always say that you need passion, persistence, and personality to do what we’re trying to do.” What she and her partner, Peruvian Milagros Berrios, are trying to do is make it in fashion, and if passion, persistence, and personality are truly all that are required, this team should be a shoo-in. But it’s a safe bet that their effortlessly chic, exquisitely handcrafted designs will have a little something to do with it, too.

Blogs Serve Up S.B. Flavor

Food blogs have been dishing up Santa Barbara food news and reviews for a while now. They’re not as well known as food sections of newspapers and they might not all be local, but they’ve been sharing our “flavor” and tantalizing taste buds on a worldwide scale. A Google search brings up a few blog entries. Oishiieats (oishiieats.blogspot.com) from the Los Angeles area succumbed to the lure of the late Julia Child’s favorite haunt, La Super-Rica Taqueria.
