Bald Eagles on the Rise
on the Channel Islands
The distorted bishop pine stood out like no other within a narrow canyon full of evergreen trees on northern Santa Cruz Island. The top of it was mushroom shaped, crowned with sun-bleached sticks and branches woven into a sturdy nest eight feet in diameter, its center padded down with dried grasses, twigs, and discarded fish bones.

UNHINGED AND UNCORKED: First, we need to get a couple of points out of the way. It happens to be the case that I am far and away the sanest person I’ve ever met. I may, in fact, be the only sane person I’ve ever met. In the world of ideas, there’s what I think-which happens to be clear, accurate, insightful, and, above all, unbiased-and then there’s what everybody else thinks, which is just the opposite. Throughout the years, I’ve been forced to learn the wisdom of masking such notions.

Even after a two-year battle with a life-threatening illness-which he bravely conquered-the man still makes better music than just about anyone else. So with my preconceived notions only slightly obstructing my critical perspective, I’ve attempted to articulate what made for yet another fabulous Sings Like Hell show at the Lobero Theatre.
