Putumayo’s Americana: Impossible to categorize but reflective of our country’s cultural diversity, the musical genre Americana means many things to many people. But this collection by Putumayo-whose partial proceeds go to the Second Harvest food bank network-shows that we should all love it.

FADE TO BLACK: Losing both Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni on the same midsummer’s day came as a stunning one-two punch, a cruel twist of fate. On further reflection, though, maybe it carries a beautifully poetic resonance, having to do with a rite of passage, and the waning of an era.

EVERYTHING’S BIGGER IN VELTEXAS: Look no further than SOhO on Thursday, August 9, when Isla Vista’s Veltexans will take no prisoners with new material from their debut album, Everything’s the Matter, released on August 7. Hailing originally from the action-packed lands of Idaho, the trio only recently made the move to Santa Barbara, leaving behind their residency at one of the biggest clubs in the state.

Dracula

The audience stepped out of the Santa Barbara sun and into a dark and gloomy Center Stage Theater last weekend, dusting off Fiesta confetti and settling in for the Summer Stock Youth Theater’s production of the horror story Dracula. The show delivered the expected blood-curdling shrieks and air of general creepiness befitting its dark tale, but it was Dracula‘s unanticipated humor that showcased the creativity of director Kyra Lehman and her cast of 30 teenaged actors and made this version of the gothic staple unique.
