What Goes Well with Lots of Beer? More Beer!

While we might be used to, and fret over, wine pairings with our meals, how often do we ponder what beer or ale best goes with dinner? David Walker of Firestone Walker Brewery and Chef Cristina Gonzalez of Lazy Acres have decided to help us with a Beer and Food Tasting Menu on Friday, August 17, from 7-9 p.m. in the Lazy Acres Cafe.

The Independent Celebrates Animals

Animals-both domestic and wild-add much to the charm of our seaside hamlet. Whether it be dogs playing on the beach; dolphins jumping through the waves just offshore; cows and horses grazing along the highway; cats in store windows; or mountain lions in the backcountry, Santa Barbarans are never far from their next animal encounter.
As such, we at The Independent like to devote a section of the paper to our furry, feathered, and scaly friends in our annual Animal Issue. The following pages include a story about Turtle Dreams, a reptile rescue and rehabilitation center; the benefits of holistic medicine for your pets; and a commentary about the perks of adopting an older dog or cat. So, read on : and be kind to animals!

Lima Beans

Look, you probably thought kissing was icky when you were a kid, too, so grow up. Alas, too many of us meet the lima out of a can or the freezer, and it’s one legume that needs to be fresh to avoid that mealy mushiness that turns us off. A fresh lima bean can’t be beat for “green is the flavor of summer” yumminess.

Anders Johnson’s Stone Sculptures

If the definition of “art” is work designed for gallery viewing and presented in a space where people move slowly through a sterile white room, stand in small groups some distance from the work, and speculate quietly about the meanings and motives of the artist, maybe Anders Johnson’s work isn’t art at all.

Hometown Hero Karch Kiraly Set to Retire This Summer

Karch Kiraly has often been called the Michael Jordan of beach volleyball, but it might be more fitting to compare him to Hank Aaron. They both achieved magic career numbers: Kiraly’s 148 tournament championships and Aaron’s 755 home runs. They both performed with consistency, dignity, and longevity. To many baseball fans, Aaron’s number will be the most respected no matter how much it is inflated by Barry Bonds.
