Hairspray, Redux

In 2002, New Line debuted Hairspray: The Musical, the Broadway adaptation of John Waters’s 1988 cult classic film. It was a smash hit and went on to win the Tony for best musical. The story tells of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with a big heart and big hair, who has only one passion-dancing. Her dream is to appear on The Corny Collins Show, Baltimore’s hippest dance party on TV.

Cellar-Worthy Discoveries

Like many die-hard, smitten, obsessed wine lovers, I am always on the lookout for new wines with which to fall in love. In order to become an object of my adoration, a wine must hold my interest, it must captivate my senses, it must make me want to return to it again and again by virtue of its complexity and charm, and, finally, it must have personality. When you talk about a wine’s personality, you enter the realm of the ineffable.

Pick it Up

Musab’s Slicks Box: A real-life pimp by day-aka Minnesota Slicks, and he swears it’s true-Minneapolis’s Musab was recently picked up by Oakland’s Hieroglyphics label, which presents this nicely flowing, at times introspective hip-hop album. While we’re not really into the degrading act of pimping hos, we do like Musab’s lyrical mastery and honest musing about whether the mack life is really the right one to live.

Rosa Martha Villarreal’s The Stillness of Love and Exile

Whenever we tell a story, the tale weaves from the past through the present and into the future. In fiction, those different realities-varying possibilities of what is and what could be-overlap through methods both magical and meaningful. Engrossed in the pages of a novel, the reader travels through time.

Honoring Flamenco

“The first time I saw a flamenco performance, I cried. Something just hit me.” When she speaks about the art form to which she has dedicated her life, Linda Vega becomes animated, her eyes sparkling and her hands gesturing as if she herself were onstage. Vega was in her early twenties when she first saw flamenco dancer Juan Talavera perform.

Alexa & Hannah Borroel Meet Sugarland

When the Borroel sisters went to Nashville for the Country Music Association (CMA) Music Festival, they knew they were in for lots of twang, Southern glitz, and a great concert from their favorite band, Sugarland. However, the Santa Ynez teens never guessed they’d be featured on national television a couple weeks later.

Zucchini Ratatouille

What do mother-in-laws, zucchini, and New Jersey all have in common? They’re the butts of numerous old and lame jokes. Sure, when zucchini grows well it produces amply, but there’s plenty to do with it. Try this simplified take on ratatouille, and be sure to serve it over couscous.

My Best Friend

Ten years ago, director Patrice Leconte was a name that conjured hope for a renewed French cinema. After the double whammy of the tense, satisfying Monsieur Hire and the almost random joys of The Hairdresser’s Husband, he seemed headed out past modernism’s shores to more haunted and visionary neighborhoods. This film seems to prove that old hope is gone. Can you say sold out?
