The U.S. Forest Service seeks the community’s help for more clues into cause of the Gap Fire, which began July 1 in the foothills north of Goleta. The point of origin has been identified: The fire originated in the Lizard’s Mouth area off of West Camino Cielo, about four miles west of Highway 154, in the late afternoon.

Forest Service Special Agent Heather Campbell requested that anybody who has information, or anybody who was in the vicinity at the time, call the 24-hour tip-line at Los Padres National Forest headquarters. That number is (805) 961-5710.

Campbell said investigators do not yet know if the fire was set intentionally or accidentally, but they are particularly interested in descriptions of any vehicles seen parked or traveling in the area-make, model, color, what have you-as well as a physical description of any people and their approximate location.
