Darker My Love’s new album, 2, starts off like a heavily distorted rock ‘n’ roll revolution and moves rapidly along, nailing all the right parts along the way. Head-bobbing rhythms reminiscent of The Charlatans can be heard on “Blue Day,” melodies similar to Clinic’s surround “White Composition,” and a Dandy Warhol’s approach to trippy, urgent vocals runs throughout the entire album. Neatly wrapped in something truly vintage, 2 has great, authentic rock interludes with elements of serious electric blues guitar. It’s the sound of new rock, but it’s also thoughtfully derivative of the old school. It waves goodbye to the days of aggressive screaming vocals and says hello to a ’90s underground commodity: the distortion petal. Welcome back, rock ‘n’ roll music. We missed you.
