Celebrate National Pie Day on January 23

Thu Jan 22, 2009 | 12:00am

Celebrated every January 23, National Pie Day was created by the American Pie Council to commemorate the history, tradition, and overall enjoyment of pies. This year, the holiday will take on perhaps a more politically flavored tone as the new president is a self-proclaimed pie lover. Last year, under the iconic Gateway Arch in St. Louis, then candidate Obama stated, “Some people like cake. : I like pie!”

A variety of pies are available to celebrate with locally. Solvang Pie Co. has been baking pies for 22 years. They use fruit grown on their property to create delectable seasonal delights. You can find their pies at Gelson’s and the Santa Barbara Farmers Markets. Hana Miller and Nancy Blau, owners of the newest pie place in town, Simply Pies, specialize in organic pastries. Their mixed berry pie comes highly recommended and getting your hands on one is easy as, well, you know what; just go to their Web site, simplypiessb.com. Another berry, berry good pie is the famous olallieberry pie from Linn’s Restaurant up the coast in Cambria. But if you need a slice immediately, head to Fresco Cafe at Five Points and partake of one of their gargantuan apple pies.
