What: One of the oldest and most recognizable steakhouses in Santa Ynez

How Much: Carnitas tacos $11, entree steaks $22-$37

The Dish: A fire-engine red exterior houses Red Barn Steak House, a downtown Santa Ynez institution known for hearty fare in a rustic ranch house atmosphere. Antlers on the wall, exposed brick, red checkered tablecloths, and a lively bar area strike a chord with locals and visitors alike. Serving lunch and dinner six days a week (it’s closed Mondays), the restaurant rotates specials through the menu, featuring such items as pork chops with homemade applesauce, prime rib dip sandwich, Brazilian lobster tail, 16 oz. T-bone steak, beer-braised Kurobuta pork short ribs, and the elusive crack pie for dessert. All of the dessert items are freshly baked, including the creamy chocolate peanut butter cheesecake, grasshopper pie, strawberry shortcake, and crème brûlée. Pastrami and steak sandwiches are popular for lunch, served with side salads, soups, and/or French fries. Large hunks of garlic sit atop the dinner steaks, the restaurant’s signature dishes. Don’t miss the outdoor patio on warm evenings.
