No doubt I’ve missed the notices about the bricking of downtown intersections. I can see the benefits of prettying up the city in better economic times. But in times like these, as intersections are carved up for what seems like weeks, only to be redone with bricks, I cannot help but stop and wonder.
The man-hours involved are huge. These workers could redo entire streets that span the length of town in the time and materials spent on one lonely intersection. So what gives with the policy makers? We cannot afford to keep our streets well-surfaced, so how—better yet, who decided that this money should be spent so frivolously? Whoever they are, let’s vote them out. And don’t tell me it’s just another giveaway from the American Recovery Act. If it is, that money could have been spent much more wisely.—Robert Walton
