We don’t know all the reasons people kill themselves, but one reason to stay alive is the chance to have breath-taking beauty in our lives, like when crossing the San Marcos Pass Bridge into the Santa Ynez Valley. Putting up a fence may deter some from the final deed, but it—and similar acts of closing down delight—will cause others to do it, even if it means having to find an alternative route.
