Before Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins was known for his rum, he was known for his tattoos.
Next Monday, October 4, the Lobero Theatre will screen “Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry,” a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of Mr. Collins.
Based in Honolulu for most of his career, the film peers into the life of the man whose American Folk/ Japanese infused tattoo style was blasted onto the bodies of thousands of enlisted soldiers stationed in Hawaii during World War II.
Filled with rare interviews of some of the biggest names in the biz, the film also ventures into the past, present and future of tattooing.
