Off and Running

Autumn signifies not only the start of the academic school year but also the kickoff of myriad sports seasons. This week, our Indy sportswriter gives the lowdown on whom to watch at which schools in what sports — including soccer, volleyball, water polo, and football.

Fall Sports Preview – Water Polo

UCSB has a pair of returning water polo All-Americans — Milos Golic, a first-team selection, and Zsombor Vincze, honorable mention — who could be poster boys for the NCAA ideal of the well-rounded student/athlete.

Fall Sports Preview – Soccer

Any notion that UCSB would have a smooth ride to the 2010 College Cup, the NCAA men’s soccer championship that will be held in its own stadium, was dispelled in the first game of the season.

Indy Loving London

Before hitting up Buckingham Palace this summer to see the changing of the guard, sisters Natalie (left) and Camille (center) Wyss and their friend Emily Clark (right)—all three Dos Pueblos High students—stopped outside a London phone booth to pose for a photo with a copy of The Independent.

Views of Afar

I like that you focus for a brief moment on your staff and interns in the contents section of your paper. I was looking at the photo of Susannah Lopez with her Independent on the shores of Lock Ness and I thought to myself, “Wait, I’ve been there at that exact spot.”
