It is interesting that Lois Capps is characterized as being nice. I would not know, as my letters, phone calls, and efforts to contact her in person have been rebuffed. Her staff appears to have very little understanding of governmental issues or where answers can be found, as in who is the appropriate person at the federal level to talk to. Her written responses to me, probably written by inexperienced junior staff, have been either off-topic or incoherent.

When I was still working, about ten years ago, and tried to reach the FCC [Federal Communications Commission], I finally ended up getting a prompt response from outside the district, by calling up Congressman Elton Gallegly’s office. Not only was I given a federal contact person to talk to, but there was a follow-up call the next day from his office.

From all this, I can only conclude that her lock on the liberal student vote in Isla Vista, together with her homogeneous ribbon of shame, allows her to ignore the public and still get reelected. It seems like this is a liberal equivalent of the Boardwalk Empire shown on the recent television show, a dramatization of Nucky Thompson and his political machine in Atlantic City. However, albeit crooked, he seemed to be available and concerned with his constituents, steps that Lois has ignored.—Merle Betz
