It’s just a baby step toward a far-off reality, but the much anticipated plan to build a Target superstore in the heart of Goleta will undergo its first hearing before the city’s Design Review Board on Tuesday, January 24, 3 p.m., in Goleta City Hall.

The point of Tuesday’s hearing, explained planner Scott Kolwitz, is for the DRB “to consider the architectural styling and physical placement” of the proposed store, which is currently expected to be nearly 165,000 square feet on two stories with 422 parking spaces and located near the existing corner of Hollister Avenue and Los Carneros Way.

Target officials hope to demolish the existing buildings — which currently house a FedEx processing plant, the Goleta Valley Athletic Club, and Enviroscape Landscaping — reconfigure the property, and realign Los Carneros Way to make a new intersection at Hollister.
