St. Barbara Poster Contest

The Indy Calls On Artists To Create Poster of St. Barbara

Wed Oct 17, 2012 | 06:00am

Saint Barbara was the daughter of a wealthy pagan man who kept her sequestered in a tower — or so the story goes. While papa was away, Babs, who had secretly converted to Christianity — a big no-no in the 3rd-century Roman Empire — had a private bathhouse built with three windows to honor the Holy Trinity. Her father was not pleased and so cut off her head; he was then struck by lightning and turned to a pile of ashes. Thanks to her martyr ways, Barbara gained cult status and was eventually made the patron saint of artillerymen (i.e., of imminent doom), among others. To coincide with the feast day of St. Barbara (Dec. 4), The Indy is calling on artists to create an original image of the woman for whom our town is named. Submissions must be two-dimensional; the winning image will run in our December 6 issue. Deadline is November 22. Send images to saintbarbara@independent.com.
