Santa Barbara’s Dante Elephante has released its first full-length record, Anglo-Saxon Summer. Produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, the album combines up-tempo garage guitar pop aesthetics with quirky stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Twangy surf-punk tune “Never Trust a Junkie” has a petulant Pixies vibe, while “Pop Song” is reminiscent of John Lennon’s gorgeous “#9 Dream.” On “Yung Gurls,” a world-weary Ruben Zarate ruefully proclaims, “Young girls, they’ll lie but they’ll lie to you,” and on the tripped-out “Twin Lakes,” he blurts, “Cold blooded / Let me see your hands / Little Darlin’ / I wanna be your man.” This album is recommended listening for Italian pachyderms named Beatrice, as well as those who appreciate unorthodox indie-pop tunes from California’s own land of the Lotus-eaters delivered with panache.
