All Jack Crosbie wants to do is write the news. During his two years at the UCSB student paper the Daily Nexus, he was known for putting in long hours ​— ​often sleeping in the office — and churning out voluminous copy.

Tyco Closing Carpinteria Plant

Coastal View News reported last week that the Tyco Electronics plant in Carpinteria will shut down by the end of 2013, shifting production to Tyco facilities in China, Mexico, and North Carolina, and eliminating around 100 area jobs.

Fun in the Sun Program Wins National Award

United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Fun in the Sun program, along with a program in Ohio and one in New York, was recognized by the National Summer Learning Association for “demonstrating excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting healthy development for low-income young people.”

Free 6-Week Walk/Run Training

In partnership with the Montectio YMCA, the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is offering a FREE 6-Week Training Program to help participants of all ability levels prepare for the 20th Annual Walk/Run taking place on Sunday, October 14. 100% of proceeds from the Walk/Run benefit local cancer research through Cancer Center’s Clinical Research Program.
