About Chessmar Sculpture

Brian Chessmar prefers steel as a medium but is also skilled in bronze. His elaborate work can be seen throughout Santa Barbara and most notably in the recently remodeled Cottage Hospital with two commissioned pieces that grace the boardroom terrace and central garden. Denise Stevens of Cottage Hospital commented, “We selected Brian’s sculptures because of the conceptual integrity of his work as well as the elegance of his designs, which corresponded to the goals of our project. While his designs push the physical limits of balance in his use of geometric, organic, and curvilinear forms, each one evokes a unique aesthetic experience for the observer.” Chessmar has mastered the art and techniques of the fabrication of steel and bronze sculptural forms, which is his forte. Chessmar was discovered and mentored by Aristides Demetrios, an American sculptor, who helped him to find his direction and style of artistic expression. Chessmar received an Associate Degree from Santa Barbara City College and received a Bachlor of Fine Arts degree in 2005 from The School Of The Arts Institute Of Chicago. Chessmar deals with the balance or lack of balance between the self and its conditions. In considering this precarious balance, his work exhibits the relationship of the body, mind and soul to the environment.
