Wondering what is safe and what is not safe right now? Should we be bleaching our groceries or going to the gym*? What more could our community do to protect its most vulnerable? Why should we “poop test” our schools* and what does that mean? Social Epidemiologist Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller wants to answer your COVID-19 questions!

Southern California native, Dr. Fielding-Miller is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego in the Division of Infectious Disease and Global Public Health and the Center on Gender Equity and Health. Like many public health experts, Dr. Fielding-Miller has stepped up to focus on our current COVID-19 crisis. Her team’s work on the risk to farmworkers was recently featured  by CNN. In March, the San Diego Tribune published a letter from her: “An infectious disease expert says staying home is an act of ‘love, solidarity, science’”. Her public health research is centered around social justice and the practice of affirming the “inherent worth and dignity of every human being”. Previously she made the news for organizing a nurse-in protest against family separation at the US Mexican border.

The Santa Barbara Unitarian Society is hosting a zoom townhall with Dr. Fielding-Miller on August 6th 5:30-6:30 pm. The zoom link for the meeting is https://uuma.zoom.us/j/99354155022. You can also go to the virtual events section on USSB.org for all our online events.  Participants will not appear on screen, but will be able to submit questions via the chat function. Dr. Fielding Miller is particularly interested in answering questions and concerns children may have about COVID-19 and children and families are invited to send their questions ahead of the event. Please submit childrens questions and questions about the event to our religious education team at christina@ussb.org.

*According to Dr. Fielding Miller the answers to the questions regarding grocery bleaching, gym going, and poop testing are: no, emphatically no, and emphatically yes.
