Brain surgeon Martin Mortazavi, M.D., founder and medical director of the California Institute of Neuroscience in Thousand Oaks, has announced the formation of a nonprofit dedicated to advancing research in the field and educating fellow neurosurgeons and other professionals in related areas of medicine. Brain tumors have no socio-economic boundaries and do not discriminate among gender, age or ethnicity. According to the American Brain Tumor Association: Over 700,000 Americans are currently living with a brain tumor. Nearly 80,000 people will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumor this year. There are more than 120 different types of primary brain and central nervous system tumors. Approximately 32% of brain and central nervous system tumors are malignant. About 28,000 kids in the United States are fighting brain tumors right now. This year, nearly 16,000 people will die as a result of a brain tumor. Mortazavi and his team have earned a stellar reputation in the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment and post-surgical aspects of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebrovascular disease. They are experts at treating aneurysms; arteriovenous malformations (AVM); skull base tumors including pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas and meningiomas; trigeminal neuralgia; and many other medical conditions related to the brain and spine. On behalf of our entire team, we are delighted to announce the formation of our nonprofit foundation, which formalizes many of the endeavors we have been involved with for years, said Mortazavi. We are witnessing so many breakthroughs in our field in recent years and my colleagues and I have been on the vanguard of many of those advances. Although it’s not under the auspices of our nonprofit, our team is also involved in pro bono work on behalf of patients who dont have the resources for treatment, he continued. One of the most gratifying aspects of our work is employing the safest and latest technology to give our patients a new lease on life. Unlike many neurosurgical practices, Mortazavi employs a team approach to care so that patients are treated holistically. They include neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychologists, psychiatrists, cranial maxillofacial plastic surgeons, ENTs, spine/peripheral neurosurgeons and neuro-ophthalmologists.
