About “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” Phenomenon
A box office flop that was pulled from the few screens showing it in 1975, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” was resurrected by a devout fanbase fueled by midnight screenings. It has since grossed over $170 million worldwide and holds the record for the longest continually running movie release of all time.
It was originally a musical play created in 1973 by Richard O’Brien who portrayed Riff Raff in both the stage and film versions. The 1975 movie version was not a success upon release and only gained popularity after audience-participation midnight showings spread from New York City throughout the country.
Tim Curry made his screen debut as Frank N Furter, the transvestite scientist from outer space who seduces both Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), a young couple who stumble on his castle on a rainy night. Other film cast members include Peter Hinwood as Rocky Horror, Dr. Furter’s monster creation; Patricia Quinn as Riff Raff’s incestuous sister Magenta, Little Nell as the tap-dancing groupie Columbia, Meatloaf as a juvenile delinquent biker named Eddie, and Jonathan Adams as Eddie’s uncle Dr. Scott.
