This is a unique look at a vanishing American treasure: the herds of wild horses that have roamed our continent for hundreds of years — and are now in jeopardy.

The book’s principal focus is the wild herds of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, and it follows the bands of horses throughout the changing seasons and also the horses’ distinct cycles of life. Far more than just stunning photos, Deborah Kalas carefully documents and explains the fascinating family-like interactions among the members of the herds. There is even a vivid glossary that explains those interactions in detail.

The book highlights an important cause: these herds are in danger, due to government policies and a lack of public understanding of their historical and cultural importance. The author provides helpful links to the key organizations trying to save the herds.

The quality of the photography, and the elegance of the design and printing, create a true keepsake book on a subject of great importance to our common American heritage.
