Recently retired UCSB sociology professor Rich Appelbaum is the quintessential activist-academic. A major contributor to the now-famous Impacts of Growth study that forever changed the thought process behind urban planning, he is equally focused on issues of economic justice, from rent control to international labor and sweatshop working conditions.

To amplify The Indy‘s “Creating the Future” news feature, videographers Phyllis de Picciotto and Stan Roden have assembled short films about the professor’s formative years and also comments from those who’ve been down in the trenches with Rich Appelbaum.
