Jake and "Buddy" at Hope Elementary

When children read to dogs, they get excited, they get motivated, and their literacy skills improve. The model has proven wildly successful in other parts of the country, and is particularly effective for otherwise shy or reluctant young readers. So this past semester, the local non-profit group All For Animals launched a pilot program at Santa Barbara’s Hope Elementary in which 1st and 2nd graders read to specially trained therapy dogs once a week.
