It was almost a year ago that filmmaker Mike DeGruy died tragically in a helicopter crash. It was a day his friends at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival will never forget. Over ten years ago Mike had helped create “Field Trip to the Movies”, for which Title I school kids are bused in from all over the county during the festival for a free day at the movies and a chance to learn about filmmaking. It has become one of the festival’s largest marquee events, and this year, the festival staff has renamed the event in his honor.
