Gardeners, custodians, cooks, and building maintenance workers at UCSB are among the 8,500 service employees statewide trying to get a new labor contract from the University of California. At issue are wages that qualify some of the workers for public welfare benefits. For their part, UC officials say they are offering the highest raises they can considering the state’s budget limitations.
