On Tuesday and Wednesday, members of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department participated in the annual Southern California Law Enforcement Torch Run, which raises money for the Special Olympics and for sports programs involving people with developmental disabilities.

After carrying the torch, which is bound for Long Beach, the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association donated $5,000 to the Southern California branch of the Special Olympics, explained the department’s spokesperson Drew Sugars.

According to the Special Olympics Southern California website, last year’s run saw over 2,000 officers carry the torch for 500-plus miles. The funds raised for the local sports programs as well as for the Special Olympics come from a combination of donations and sponsorships.
