Top 3 Ponderings of Bill Davis

War may be central to our cultural consciousness these days, but for Montecito resident Bill Davis, it’s more than a concept-it’s a vivid memory. Along with his friend and fellow vet, comedian Jonathan Winters, Davis will be at Borders Books on Thursday, June 21, from 7-9 p.m., to introduce his memoir, Sinking the Rising Sun: Dog Fighting and Dive Bombing in World War II.

What do you get when you cross a scientific expedition to the Arctic, a mysterious creature trapped in the ice of an ancient glacier, the Coast Guard, and a few assorted boatloads of drunken fishermen and Frenchmen?

The Moishe Mobile at Bonnaroo

A vivid green bus and eight recent UCSB grads took a love of art and the message of environmental sustainability on the road last week while en route to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee.

Bowling for Hollers

From the never-know-what-you-miss-’til-it’s-gone file comes the story of the Santa Barbara Bowl, circa 2007. Construction delayed the start of the summer concert parade and left us with a strange, queasy, unsatisfied feeling every time we rounded the corner from Anapamu Street onto Milpas Street.
