Mary Ostrand
Mary Ostrand lost her life as her house burned February 16th. Her dog, Caitlin survived the fire and is being cared for by friends. Mary was born in Michigan and lived several years on the east coast with her late husband, Phil before moving to Santa Barbara where Phil was a professor at UCSB.
Mary was a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She did her student teaching at the Carpinteria School District and was a substitute teacher there and in the Santa Barbara School District for many years. She loved to tutor students and worked with many in math, algebra, and calculus. Mary loved nothing better than a math problem or puzzle and to discuss math theory with friends.
Mary loved her Dandie Dinmont Terriers, eating out with friends, anything mathematical, sewing, and playing bridge. Mary was the current president of the Channel City Kennel Club, treasurer of the Los Padres Obedience Club and active with the Santa Barbara Bridge Center. Her passing leaves a big hole in our lives and we will miss her tremendously. A celebration of her life with be held Sunday, March 15th at Shoreline Park west of the upper parking lot area at 3 P.M.
