Robert Vincent McLaughlin

Robert Vincent McLaughlin 2/15/1917 – 7/9/2011

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Went to Notre Dame, graduated. Pearl Harbor was bombed. Evaded the Army to join the Navy. Served as lieutenant on USS Suwannee. After WWII married Mary Kelly from Akron, Ohio having met South Bend, Indiana during college.Lived in Manila, Philippines selling household goods for Union Carbide. Arrived in Santa Barbara early 1950s with three children. Didn’t want to leave Santa Barbara.

Dad passed the stock-brokerage exam for Paine-Webber-Jackson-Curtis to begin 35 plus years career in SB. Lived in small house at Golf and Hot Springs roads in the 1950s, then upper Hot Springs Road (now 669). In 1970 moved beachside. Robert belonged to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish for years and sent 6 natural children and four adopted cousins (from mom’s side) to Mount Carmel Grade School and most of us to Bishop Garcia Diego High School. Dad seriously loved to watch football on television and for years enjoyed walking the shore to frequent our au naturel beaches. Loved white wine and talking to my mom and looking out to sea most late afternoons. A good whistler and undiscovered booming singer, his two favorites, ‘Are You Lonely Tonight’, first published in 1926 and made famous by Elvis Presley, and ‘Hello Dolly’.

A lot of my friends liked my dad. Dad was a loner his whole life I was informed by a lifelong friend years ago. ‘Always like that.’

Dad is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary A. McLaughlin (SB).
Sons; Dennis (Carpinteria, Ca) Patrick (Santa Ynez, Ca), Chris (Cumming, Georgia) and Matthew (California).
Daughters; Theresa Patterson (Lafayette Ca), and Molly Rhine (Los Gatos, Ca).
