Maimu was born on June 23, 1923, in Tallinn, Estonia. She died of ovarian cancer on September 2, 2011, in her home on the Mesa in Santa Barbara surrounded by family. Maimu is survived by her daughter Annemari, son-in-law Hank, grandchildren Leyla and Eli, and great-grandchildren Jax and Bryce.

Maimu graduated from the University of Tartu in Estonia and the Medical Faculty at the University of Heidelberg in Germany on August 7, 1950. She arrived in the United States on February 13, 1951, and completed her Internship and Residency at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ, attaining Chief Resident Physician status. From there, Maimu completed a Residency in Radiology at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in East Orange, NJ. Included in this Residency was a Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, NY, in Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Oncology. Maimu returned to the VA Medical Center in East Orange, NJ, where she served as Medical Chief of Radiation Service from 1961 until she retired in 1997, Acting Chief of the Cancer Center from 1988 to 1990, and Consultant to the Cancer Center from 1997 to 2007. Maimu received a professorship from the University of Medicine and Dentistry NJ, New Jersey Medical School, Newark, as a Clinical Assistant Professor (1974-1977) and Clinical Associate Professor in Radiology (1977-1998). She was also a member of many medical societies and cancer clinical study groups.

Maimu will be missed and remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A memorial service will be held at Welch-Ryce-Haider on State Street and Sola Street at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2011.
