For the last seven years, pinot noir lovers from around the country have descended upon the shores of Shell Beach at the Cliffs Resort during the spring months to celebrate a varietal that is widely revered and loved.
When April arrives, wine lovers from all over Southern and Central California start planning for the Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Festival, one of the most popular wine festivals in the state. In years past, the festival has been held at Firestone Meadow on Foxen Canyon Road.
One of my favorite things to do on a sleepy Sunday morning is take a drive to a place that puts me in the mood to relax and mentally prepare for the coming work week. I love driving through the Santa Maria Valley, particularly through the countryside, dotted as it is with agricultural crops, farmhouses, and vineyards.
About 20 years ago, most Americans drank their wines out of a jug. Wine was considered a complement to the average dinner meal, but was not yet considered to be the staple of daily living that it has become.
It’s been damn cold lately. The other night, it got down to 14 degrees here in Santa Ynez. It’s the kind of cold that chills one’s blood and bones. Whenever there’s a real cold snap, I reach for a good vintage port. Now, I’m not suggesting this will keep you warm and safe throughout winter. Blankets, healthful food, and heat are the best remedy for that.
In a week, it will be time for Valentine’s Day. It’s actually one of my favorite days of the year, as it affords me the opportunity to let my loved ones know how I feel about them, and it’s also a great excuse to drink champagne.
