Q: ‘How did World War I affect Santa Barbara?’

Although the First World War did have an impact on Santa Barbara, it did not have as large an effect as World War II had on the community. The war broke out in August 1914, but the U.S. did not enter the conflict until spring 1917. Europe seemed very far away from California and there was not as much apprehension about a direct attack-a contrast to the fear in the months following Pearl Harbor. Still, Santa Barbarans certainly did not ignore the War to End All Wars.

Season’s Bleatings

We hope this holiday letter finds you merry, gay, and all the other pleasant emotions the season demands of you.Whew! What a whirlwind year it’s been for us.
The baby is quite active these days. He likes to bang his head on things and spin around until he falls down. We assume this is because he’s so smart, and he’s trying to slow his poor little brilliant mind down to a more comfortable level.

California Tiger Salamander Declared Endangered State-Wide

By overturning a vote by the state Fish and Game Commission, a state Superior Court Judge has declared that the Californian populations of tiger salamanders should be classified as endangered.

Old Crow Medicine Show

The reviewer first came across this band while stoking an early morning fire at a friend’s home a few miles north of Big Sur while looking for a soundtrack to his pre-breakfast duties. He discovered a perfectly balanced ensemble of banjos, fiddles, a harmonica, and a stand-up bass.

Knock-Off Knock-Out

In fourth grade I wanted a Mongoose BMX racing bike for Christmas. We didn’t have much money, so, instead of the elite two-wheeler, Mom got me the Kmart version. I really didn’t mind. It looked pretty much the same as its expensive cousin. It seemed to work as well as a Mongoose. But I was concerned with what my friends would say when they found out my bike came from a discount store.

Dona Nobis Pacem

Rows of perfect Roman arches lead up to the altar at St. Anthony’s Seminary Chapel, where the Quire of Voyces, an a cappella choral group of 26 accomplished vocalists, sang underneath the serene gaze of the Holy Trinity on Saturday night. Nathan Kreizer, the founder and artistic director of the group, conducted this concert of Renaissance and modern sacred works with understated grace and elegance.

Unlimited Potential

From the opening notes of the evening’s first piece, Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite, Op. 40, it was clear the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra has never been more healthy, vital, and spirited. Without the presence of a guest soloist, it was easier than ever to hear the individual musicians, and to understand why they take such pleasure in their programs.
