Preucil, Kim, and Rowe Trio, presented by the Music Academy of the West. At Lotte Lehmann Hall, Tuesday, November 28.

Last Tuesday night at the Music Academy of the West’s Lotte Lehmann Hall, a “what’s wrong with this picture” feeling quickly segued into a satisfying “what’s right with this picture” sensation. After decades of expecting and experiencing the Music Academy of the West’s musical splendor in its usual summertime slot, a new wrinkle has appeared with the inaugural Advanced Strings Workshop.

Culture Schlock

Turistas. Josh Duhamel, Melissa George, Olivia Wilde, Desmond Askew, and Beau Garrett star in a film written by Michael Ross and directed by John Stockwell.

As we walked into the theater to get our periodic dose of slasher-style schlock in the form of Turistas, the smart-mouthed ticket-taker quipped, “Okay, two for the Brazilian Hostel.” That’s about right, with a splash of TV’s Fear Factor and some post-Aruba xenophobia thrown in for bad measure.

A Bright Idea

Light/Art: Mystic Crystal Revelation. At Contemporary Arts Forum. Shows through January 7, 2007.

This group show hinges on the idea that light has achieved such currency as an art medium that it no longer need be considered strange or new. Just like oil paintings or bronze sculptures, it suggests, light works have been around long enough to exist without justification as artistic innovations.

Cops, City Hall at Loggerheads Over New Contract

The bad blood between the Santa Barbara Police Officers Association (POA) and City Hall over contract negotiations-which are currently at a standstill-just got a whole lot worse. After a two-hour meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel, the union membership voted for the fourth time to reject City Hall’s “best, last, and final offer.”

Strength of Strings

Charlie Haden and Quartet West. At the Lobero Theatre, Wednesday, November 29.

Charlie Haden radiates a rare kind of strength, and from the warm reception he and his Quartet West received at the Lobero last Wednesday, Santa Barbara knows it. Whatever the connections that make Haden such a favorite in our town, this special affection was in ample evidence from the opening notes of his packed show.

Reversal Of Fortune

Goleta Gets Development Friendly

Michael Bennett, Eric Onnen, and Roger Aceves took the oath of office as members of the young City of Goleta’s second City Council, replacing Cynthia Brock, Jack Hawxhurst, and Margaret Connell. Goleta’s administrative staff welcomed the new councilmembers with sparkling cider and a prettily decorated sheet cake from Costco.

Once in a Blue Moon

Zabella’s Circle, presented by Arts for Humanity! and the Blue Moon Players.
At Center Stage Theater, Saturday, December 2. Plays through December 9.

Once in a while, a show comes along that somehow circumvents the whole set of assumptions and standards I use to evaluate art. It’s almost impossible to predict beforehand whether a show will have that kind of effect, and even after the fact it can be hard to say why. In this case, though, I can answer the question of why.

On the Record

Ric Kangas Auctions Original Bob Dylan Recordings

More than 50 years ago, a young man in Hibbing, Minnesota, dreamed about singing-publicly, professionally, and in the style of the early rock legends that inspired him. Those familiar with the history of pop music have probably assumed that this hopeful is a young Bob Dylan.

After 10 Successful Years, S.B.’s Annual Dance Festival Closes Its Doors

When Summerdance Santa Barbara programmed Mikhail Baryshnikov and Hell’s Kitchen Dance to perform at its 10th annual festival, organizers Dianne Vapnek and Laurie Burnaby knew they’d achieved something big. Founded by Vapnek in 1997, the festival had grown during the course of a decade from a one-week, one-company affair to a three-week extravaganza.

Wants, Needs, and Two Lots of Land

S.B. School District Weighs Development Options

It has been almost exactly two years since the Santa Barbara School Board decided to explore the possibility of developing their two open-space property holdings in the name of district revenue and perhaps employee housing.
