Seacliff Beach Colony is Your Ticket to Oceanfront Living

Santa Barbarans are a bunch of beach bums. Office workers take long lunch breaks to surf when Rincon is breaking in the winter. Kids frolic in shore break and beg to be buried in the sand all summer long. And all those fanatics love to boast that they live near the beach, but not many can claim that they actually live on the beach.

Reverential Ecology Retreat

How will the western U.S. be affected by global warming? Can we expect water scarcity, energy shortages, heat waves? We’ve heard a lot about how to mitigate the effects of climate change, but what about adapting to the new landscapes we will likely inhabit?

Bless that Plaid

The Scottish Society of Santa Barbara will hold its annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan-the blessing of the ancestral plaids-this Saturday, April 29, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The event, which dates back 350 years, will feature bagpipers and singing, as well as a couple unique Scottish traditions. Whether to indulge in big city music, art, and dining or just to experience a more electric, metropolitan vibe, we Santa Barbarans often find ourselves traveling south for a City of Angels escape.

Near and Far Getaways

Twelfth Night in the Big Easy

New Orleans may be Bacchanalia on the Bayou, but this year’s Mardi Gras celebration is also tinged with a gritty determination to overcome the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. The good times are rolling in the French Quarter, largely untouched by 2005’s Katrina, but blocks and blocks of homes in surrounding neighborhoods are boarded up.
