LifeDream, a collaboration between National Geographic and Ameriprise Financial, is a program dedicated to sharing the stories and profiles of extraordinary individuals who pursue their life’s passion and calling despite the fear of straying from the comforts of “ordinary life.” Ojai resident Alexis Ells, founder of the Equine Sanctuary, certainly fits the profile, and her story will be featured on LifeDream from now through late November.

Through her organization, Ells has dedicated her life and her born talent to healing humans’ and animals’ bodies with natural medicinal remedies. The Equine Sanctuary takes in competitive horses that are past their prime, and saves them from the all-too-common fate of slaughterhouses or Premarin drug farms, both of which end in an uncomfortably drawn-out and painful death — no matter how honored the race horse was, even just a year before. Ells and her organization put all their energy, funds, and attention toward healing the horses that have given all of their being to the racetrack and the grueling work of being a competitor, and are therefore worn down and ill before their time. Thanks to Ells and her associates’ hard work, these horses are saved from vicious deaths and sold to loving foster families or stay to live out their lives comfortably within the Equine Sanctuary.

Also involved with organizations such as the Body Balance Center, Terra Oceana Inc., and the Fitness Files, Ells is living her dreams by being a strong voice in the health community and sharing her unique healing abilities and ideas with the world.

Ells’s story and her vision can be seen on podcast at nationalgeographic.com/lifedreams, and a large section of this month’s National Geographic will focus on her dream and her work.
