Yahoo!So, we've been heedlessly using up our world's previously plentiful resources. It was the march of progress, and the human race has grown at a lightning pace, but we've moved away from our connection to the earth. Perhaps now we are reconnecting. External forces require it. It is becoming clear that if this world is going to continue being habitable by so many, we'll have to be using it more prudently. More food will be needed, more efficiently grown, in ways less destructive. For our infrastructures, in all of our activities, efficient use and re-use of resources will be the ticket to our future.
One thing for sure is that tons of steel with huge gas-eating engines are not going to be transporting single human beings around for much longer.
In a century or two (hopefully), we'll be looking back, incredulous that this happened by the millions every day, all over the world, people driving cars and trucks to work, or maybe just to the store for an ice cream on a hot day. We'll be seeing this from a whole new perspective, knowing that most of that precious gasoline/energy was being used JUST TO MOVE THE VEHICLES themselves (and that cars didn't even like ice cream).
It won't be a smooth ride from now until then, but with great scientific minds and our even greater powers of consciousness, we'll get there.
