The 73rd annual Santa Barbara Easter Relays are taking place between rainstorms on the all-weather Nick Carter Track at La Playa Stadium this weekend. Today (Fri., March 25) junior college competition is underway. The first running event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, is at 11 a.m. The meet will conclude with the 4x400 relays at 4:10 p.m.

Saturday’s high school meet will start at 9 a.m. It will include boys and girls varsity and frosh-soph competition in six different relay races (4x200, 4x800, 4x100, sprint medley, distance medley and 4x400). Varsity individual races include 3,000 meters, 1,500, 100 and hurdles.

The field events will feature some outstanding area athletes, including Dos Pueblos senior Nicholas Scarvelis in the shot put and discus throw and San Marcos senior Hannah McDaniel in the high jump.

The Bash at the Beach softball tournament, to be hosted by SBCC at Pershing Park, was postponed by rain. It has been rescheduled to April 16-17.
