Excellent piece. Thank you for doing the interview and publishing it. We Americans seem hell bent on solving social problems by criminalizing the poor. Applying the criminal justice system (read jail) is an extremely expensive response for dealing with this population as well as others such as the homeless. Charting a new and more enlightened path to education, counseling and housing is the morally and fiscally responsible thing to be doing. I thank Mr. Ross for his telling of stories that show how screwed up we've let things become.

This is a huge loss to our community...and humanity. David was a talented and effective colleague. His passing is very hard to accept. He made our community a better place.
