Does anyone seriously believe that that additional cop will do more for the community, even with respect to preventing crime, than Primo which runs on a budget not much more than half the cost of the cop? If we are serious about giving disadvantaged young people an alternative to drugs or gangs we should support receational programs like Primo.

It is amazing that most of those who have commented on this case are more concerned about a breach of journalistic ethics or Peter Lance's personality or character than they are in the possibility of seriously illegal behavior by a police officer. Santa Barbara is a city where all politicians claim to love the police and actively seek the support of their union, a city that lacks any effective independent process of investigating complaints about police conduct. Is it surprising that some police might become arrogant and reckless to advance their careers? We should all welcome a defamation lawsuit, since it may be the only way we will ever know the truth.
