Willie Nelson at the Chumash Casino’s Samala Showroom

On Thursday night, May 3, at the Chumash Casino’s Samala Showroom, in front of the Lone Star flag, Willie Nelson (whom I call Long Hair) and I played the songs that have made us famous. With me set sturdily in his expert grip, Long Hair bent me achingly to “Crazy” before we chugged through “Whisky River” and “On the Road Again.”

Kimberly Ford Sings Her Sea Story

Next Thursday, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will host a CD release party and performance by Kimberly Ford, a jazz singer with a connection to the ocean. It’s a beautiful CD and the making of it is a great story-a classic Santa Barbara tale of persistence, community, and creative integrity. The format for the event includes continuous screenings of a film collaboration Ford has done with Emmy-winning underwater filmmaker Mike deGruy and a live performance by Ford with her band.

Perfect Peeping

In Santa Barbara, certain things can be counted on. June will host gloom, KTYD will host the Battle of the Burbs, and The Palm’s face will continue to play host to the world’s most perfect mustache. You’ll never find a parking space at Five Points or an affordable piece of real estate in Santa Barbara, yet you’ll continue to find errant pieces of confetti in unexpected places long after Fiesta’s final cascarone has been smashed.

Globe Trotters

HAWAI’I’S VOCAL GODDESS: Hawaiian songstress Paula Fuga-who first found fame as a rejected contestant on American Idol and recently collaborated with neighbor Jack Johnson-is embarking on her first stateside tour this month. She’ll grace Santa Barbara with her presence on Monday, May 14, at SOhO with the Culver City Dub Collective.

Planning Guidelines for Our Village Get New Format

Historically, Montecito has had a penchant for the mine-is-bigger-than-yours bragging rights, and a quick drive around the community will prove that fact. There are enormous estates in Montecito, some going back to the late 1800s, and new colossusi in progress.

Levels of Heat II, presented by Fusion Dance Company.

Kara Stewart and Cynthia Norton, director and assistant director of the Fusion Dance Company, created an emotionally evocative evening of performance. The company’s name is inspired by Stewart’s interest in fusing different dance styles and techniques, among them ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip-hop, Afro-Brazilian, and tango, and the playful fusion was a joy to watch. The dancers creatively and eloquently expressed the mood of each piece, from the sensual to the playful to the profound.

Westmont’s Lindsey Connolly Walks to the Outdoor Championships

Easier on the body but harder on the mind-that’s what Lindsey Connolly found when she switched from running to race walking on the Westmont College track and field team. “Sometimes in running you can zone out or drift off,” Connolly said. “You have to be totally focused when you’re walking. If you’re not, you might lose form or get disqualified.”
