The Rediscovery of Selden Spaulding.

Selden “Denny” Spaulding’s work of the 1960s ought to spark a widespread revival of interest in one of Santa Barbara’s most original abstract artists. Spaulding was educated at Laguna Blanca School where his father, Edward Selden Spaulding, was the first headmaster, and at Princeton, where he majored in art and archaeology. After serving in World War II, Spaulding relocated to the French countryside in 1950.

The number of truckloads of sand used to construct the world’s tallest sandcastle, which was built on Myrtle Beach, SC, in 2007. The sculpture was 49.55 feet high and took 10 days to construct.

Kayaking the California Coast

The three kayakers stepped out of their brightly colored Scupper Pro kayaks and onto A±o Nuevo Island, part of a natural preserve 55 miles south of San Francisco. The only structure on the island was an abandoned house that once served as shelter for the lighthouse caretaker and is now home to various seals that group around the fireplace like a family in winter.

Lindy Legend Frankie Manning Returns to Santa Barbara

Frankie Manning, ambassador of the lindy hop, dancer extraordinaire, and living legend in swing dance history makes his annual pilgrimage to Santa Barbara this weekend. As a pioneer of swing dance in the 1930s, Manning was at the epicenter of the movement that gave refuge to many Americans during two of the country’s greatest periods of disenchantment and strife: the Depression and World War II. Decades later, he was equally instrumental in the resurgence of swing in the ’80s and ’90s.
