The Man Who Would Remake the Miramar

Rick Caruso, L.A.’s bling-mall developer, is gambling millions that he can do what Ty Warner and Ian Schrager failed to do: Get the Miramar Hotel up and running. Last January, Caruso reportedly paid Warner $50 million for 14 acres in Montecito, some dusty permits, and broken-down cottages near the water’s edge-even after Warner warned everyone within John Davies’s reach that Montecito’s exacting building policies and process cause exasperation and exhaustion.

Company XIV

Center Stage Theater hosts all types of performances, but I’ve rarely stepped inside the black box and been so surprised by the transformation of the space. Curtainless and bare-walled, the room was dominated by a long dining table covered with silverware. Six dancers were poised around it whispering amongst themselves, already in character.

Pick it Up

Simple Kid’s SK2: Known as the Irish Beck, Simple Kid-nee Kieran McFeely, from Cork, Ireland-sounds at times a bit too much like his L.A. look-alike. But on his second release, Simple Kid shows he’s the real deal, employing lo-fi, eight-track recording methods and post-recording, hi-fi mojo to deliver groovy tunes.

Dogs Not Wogs

GO LONG: Poor Michael Vick. He’s in a lot of trouble. But then, he should have known better. He should have known that Americans will tolerate any degree of cruelty, no matter how pornographically depraved, when inflicted on foreign nationals of darker pigmentation, especially if they may or may not have had something to do with terrorism.

Concerts in the Park

One of the City of Santa Barbara’s most popular programs, the Concerts in the Park series is in full swing for the summer. Held every other Thursday at Chase Palm Park, the concerts pack in thousands of fans and are perfect for a picnic dinner and dancing barefoot. Country roots rockers Coldwater Canyon take the stage tonight, Thursday, July 26, at 6 p.m. for an evening of feel-good heel stomping.

Ulysses S. Jasz at
The James Joyce

On an uncomfortably hot Wednesday afternoon last week at a funky downtown Santa Barbara coffee shop, Alex Marshall left me thoroughly confused. Marshall claims to be the leader of the Santa Barbara-based jazz outfit Ulysses S. Jasz, but in the liner notes for the band’s 2004 release, Too Late for Valentine, Marshall’s name is found only under the “graphics” heading.

Persian Mulberries

Persian mulberries are equal parts delicious and mysterious-partially because they go for $20 per pound. One reason for their high price is that for size-to-flavor ratio, the Persian mulberry (aka black mulberry or Morus nigra) can’t be beat.

Snow Patrol, with Hot Hot Heat.

“Are you trying to seduce me?” singer Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol asked a rowdy group of Irish fans at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Tuesday night. “Because that would be weird, a gang of guys trying to seduce me. You reckon I’m easy?” he teased, before lifting his shirt to a cheering crowd.

Summerscape

Landscape painters rely on bucolic and beautiful scenes, so it’s no wonder they are the heart of SCAPE, or Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment, a five-year-old organization of more than 200 who raise money with their art to protect open spaces and raise environmental awareness.

Bus Driving Comedian Jim Eaton

It’s standing room only. The sounds of multilingual banter and the clinking of change fill the air-and then the laughter begins. But this isn’t some hip new comedy club. This is the Downtown Waterfront Shuttle, as driven by Jim Eaton.
