Jesse Rhodes

While we may not have seen a lot of Jesse Rhodes and his acoustic guitar around Santa Barbara’s live music venues recently, he has by no means been laying idle. Along with scoring the soundtrack to the eternally relevant documentary Citizen McCaw, Rhodes has been doing a little composing of his own.

For those of you fortunate enough to have caught one of his more recent live appearances, the majestically beautiful “Lipstick and Coffee” will no doubt still loom large in your reckoning. And, if you thought the song was seductive in its stripped-down acoustic form, just wait until you hear it in all its produced glory.

Rhodes is actually so pleased with the way the song has come together that he is going above and beyond to share the track with the masses. So instead of sending “Lipstick” off into the corporate music void, he has decided to put it on his MySpace site and let folks download it for free. And the more people who help themselves to the song, the happier Rhodes will be.

“I’m trying an experiment with this song,” the singer/songwriter confided recently. “This is one of the best songs I’ve ever recorded and I want to give it away. I want as many people to download it as possible and share it with as many friends as they can, and to ask their friends to share it with their friends. I’m curious to see how far it flies over this crazy electronic web.”

The bright and breezy “Lipstick and Coffee” was crafted and mastered in Rhodes’s own home studio. But it’s cool and calm exterior belies a much more professional process. Written over a year ago, then put on the back burner while Rhodes’s other musical undertakings grew and evolved, the song’s eventual recording took over two months to complete.

“I think I spent more time mixing this than any other song I’ve ever recorded in my life,” Rhodes added. “I want to see where in the world this little song ends up. They say if you love something, set it free. Well, it’s free.” Literally. To download “Lipstick and Coffee,” visit myspace.com/jesserhodesmusic.
