Win One for the Peacenik

Leah Greene’s In Memoriam to Gene Hoffman was honest and refreshing. Gene was a courageous crusader perfectly suited to her Compassionate Listening project. Her disciples in the movement will be challenged to fill the void she leaves.

My best memory of Gene was when she told me she was to be on the program for Channel City Club. This was at the height of the controversy over Vietnam. I warned Gene she would be David in the Lion’s Den. She assured me she would have the same protection David had. And so it happened. When she finished, the assemblage went speechless. Compassionate Listening prevailed. Score for the Fellowship of Reconciliation and its Quaker mentor who was so easy to love.—Hal Thornton, S.B.
