Any band that can walk the line between “eerie” and “jangly” is all right with me. Like fellow New Yorkers Grizzly Bear, the Brooklyn-born Milagres has built its sound around a potent mix of quick-fire drum beats, twinkling piano runs, and atmospheric guitar washes. At the helm of it all, Kyle Wilson’s low register provides a moody twist, recalling Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler at his most affected and, well, Canadian sounding. On Glowing Mouth, the quintet delivers pumped up pop-rock numbers (“Here to Stay”) and solemn, breathy ballads (“Halfway”) that pay homage to pre-midlife crises with a combination of theatrics and emotionality.
