Battered Bungalows

Pondering the city’s love for the Miramar after another recent planning setback.

They survived the Great Depression

But now rot through the recession –

Blue and white bungalows

Which families built and business froze.

Once a place for Joe Normal

To feel posh yet informal

Near vacationing celebrities

And middle class families;

Where the bellhop knew your name

And you were glad you came,

To see waiters balance food

While riding bikes with attitude;

When less owned yachts than rode trains,

Before Miramar played corporate games –

Blue and white bungalows,

Montecito’s thorn or historic rose?
